Communities with deaf members in NW Uganda have asked for help to remove the communication and social barriers to participation, learning & earning. Many of Arua's numerous deaf people are misunderstood, frustrated and lonely. They are also more vulnerable to environmental hazards, neglect or abuse. Most live in bush villages and can’t read. We saw that while Ugandan Sign Language (U.S.L.) is in print, it is unknown, unaffordable and un-usable by most of these deaf people. They are isolated!
